I stumbled onto a tweet today – something about “fiber for all” and as my faithful 8 readers (and countless – but still appreciated – hordes of anonymous visitors) know, I am the twin sister of a cute little monkey named Inquisitive Jacob (we’re cousins of the other monkey. You know who I’m talking about).
So I’m Digg-ing and StumbleUpon-ing about apples and powders you can mix in drinks to make sure you’re regular (at least I thought I was) only to find out, FiberForAll is actually about internet service the possibilities of technology.
Oh, we’ve heard of it, FiOS and fiber optics, but who really knows what it is? (Click that link and enlighten yourself, ladies and germs.)
Odds are if you live in the continental US, you have a choice of DSL or Cable internet and fiber optic service isn’t something you’re worried about right now. My idea is, after reading all of this, we should be thinking about it (and even be a little envious of those who have it too LOL).

So what’s so awesome about this fiber stuff? Well, for starters, the speed is … attractive – to say the least. One of the most surprising quotes from the article I linked above is this:
“…under my old Comcast Internet connection, it took around 15 minutes to upload a single 75MB video file. And by upload, I mean submitting your video to a sharing site or hosting service.
By comparison, with Fios it takes 52 seconds to upload that same video…”
We all have to think about speed – depending on how many people live in your neighborhood with Cable Internet service, at 7:00pm, you could be feeling like you’re on dial-up, and if you live far enough away from the telephone company, there’s no reason to pay extra for DSL as it’ll feel exactly the same as dialing over a telephone line too.
After reading about Fiber from many different places, I have seen basically the same ending to every blog and review – if the writer doesn’t currently have FiOS, he or she wants it Right. Now. and not a moment later. Heck, I want it Right Now and not a moment later (now you see why I said we should be envious). 15 minutes vs. 52… seconds?
(Dear Supervisor: This wouldn’t happen if we had FiOS in the office. Pl0xKThxBi.)
After reading all of this, my first thought was, “Well how much does it cost?” I’m figuring out it’s actually either comparable with or just slightly more than my current service bundle with AT&T.
But, I digress – My first point in this blog isn’t simply to tell you we should all be so lucky, it’s more to be a voice along with other voices. The idea of the speed, the clarity of sound and video, the steps we can take with a connection like this… the possibilities are really endless, my friends. Think about it – 52 seconds to upload a video – talk about viral! Truly hearing a pin drop when you’re talking to a friend – real, true, Crystal Clear Communication over a telephone, a computer, and even when watching your television!
Are we coming closer to having Smell-evision?
My second point is – I’m actually doing this as a contest entry to win a FiOS Triple Play Prize Bundle and I want to win it! *Puts Game Face On* – But after reading all these articles and reviews, it’s more than the prize, it’s just… being aware of something truly great. The thought of being able to stream music online without buffering, and with true quality – my 8 loyal readers (and countless, but still appreciated, hordes of anonymous, un-rss’d visitors) know that alone would be worth its weight in gold to me.
We live in an age of connection without physicality – shouldn’t we make the most of it? Without needing to break the bank, Fiber is the closest we’ll get to so many new opportunities – some we haven’t even thought of yet – and we’ll get there so very quickly!
It’s about possibilities – FiberForAll!
